This is an overview of possible communication in Svalbard.

It is important to notice that Ny-Ålesund is a radio silent area. This means that all use of wireless equipment is forbidden, including mobile phones and wireless equipment on laptops. For more information: www.kingsbay.no - radio silence.

communication
Svalbard is connected to the telephone network on the Norwegian mainland via fiber optic cable. Payphones that accept phone cards are also available in the settlements. The Norwegian country code + 47 is also used in Svalbard.

Standard ISDN- and analogue telephone lines are operated by the Norwegian telecommunication company Telenor. Costs for phone calls are based on Norwegian rates. This service is available in:

GSM GSM phones can be used in:

Internet Ny-Ålesund
Uninett has installed a router in Ny-Ålesund, establishing the second Point-of-Presence on Svalbard. Thus, a broadband connection is available to research and education in Ny-Ålesund. Please note that Ny-Ålesund is a radio silent area and all wirelessequipment on your laptop has to be switched of. For more information: www.kingsbay.no - radio silence.

Longyearbyen
Institutions related to research and education have a special access to UNINETT broadband connection via fiber optic cables owned by The Norwegian Space Centre. The telecommunication is operated by Telenor Svalbard.
